I read FHM for the articles: an academic dillema
I only got one subject this sem, and I took the Pop Culture class from the Sociology Department thinking that pop culture would be the unifying thread of whatever topic I would concentrate on for my thesis.
It was a practical move. My choices were political discussions and Filipino masculinity. Political discussions were interesting for me because I want to paint a picture of Filipinos talking politics in their public or private spheres. I talk politics with taxi drivers; I even want to record the conversation and post the transcriptions just to see the beauty from the mundane. Of course I talk politics at work like a drunk fish. And sometimes at school. Heck, most of my relatives and friends turn their political talk mode on whenever I walk in the room, starting with "Kamusta na ang boss mo?."
When telenovelas, "straight" news, and showbiz talk shows seemingly have the same scriptwriters, political talk is also entertainment. I am particularly interested with the hows, whether people would come to blows or laughs when talking about politics.
For a few sems, this was my topic, and looked up internet forums for data. And Prof. Samson, the pop culture prof said it was kinda boring.
What was more interesting is the other topic I have in mind: Filipino masculinities and 'new lad' magazines.

Feminist studies on mass media have primarily focused on the representations of women and how the patriarchal system utilizes the "male gaze" to impose its hegemony. Studying how men react to recent developments in the social, political, and legal systems due to the feminist movement is like Clarice Sterling interviewing Hannibal Lecter. Men have always been villainous ants under the feminist magnifying glass, and I think putting us in an ant farm is a welcome development. A bit more humane too.
Words like New Man, New Lad, metrosexuality, bromance, man-crush, and man-date (Aldus and Marco, I'm looking at you) have been creeping out like unsightly nosehairs. And like unsightly nosehairs their existence could not be denied both from the observers and the observed. Kanto boys can now mention chuva and eklat without direct association with the "federation". Cosmetic companies are now targeting males (WTF!), a fact that never fails to illicit a WTF from me. Gender equality may now mean that both men and women can be sleazebags and get away with it, as seen in Summit Media products.
So FHM Philippines can show how both men and women are depicted in popular media. Most of the time I feel that it's not my business to write a feminist paper precisely because I have balls. Now I can have an excuse, but not exactly the same undergrad excuse to see a prostitute just to conduct and in-depth interview (I'm looking at you ****!!!). But I do read FHM for the articles. OK, I mostly read and critique the captions for their witlessness. And I think I have a lot to say.
But it's still a choice between the boring-but-methodologically-sound and the exciting-and-new-but-kinda-messy. I wish I can have both, like bacon and cardiac health.
Thank you Prof. Samson for the intellectual push.

Meowr: Angelina wants to play Selina Kyle?
from comicbookmovie.com
Sexy action star Angelina Jolie has inquired about playing the feline role of Catwoman in the next Batman sequel--this according to senior Catwoman actress Julie Newmar.
Newmar, who made the role famous in the cornball Batman of the 1960s, told the New York Daily News: "Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me (she) has made inquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman's one true love. She's tremendously popular with women because she's both a heroine and a villainess."
P.S.
I have to take down the link to the leaked Wolverine trailer i posted the other day because 20th Century Fox had it taken down. Filschool rejects has this to say:
At the request of 20th Century Fox, we have removed this badass footage… Don’t act like you didn’t see that coming… We will, of course, keep you updated as more official footage and images are released.
So sa mga hindi nakaabot, malas niyo, mon ami. C'est la vie. Ha ha.

What Bush and Batman Have in Common By ANDREW KLAVAN
By ANDREW KLAVAN
from Wall Street Journal Online
25 July 2008
Oh, wait a minute. That's not a bat, actually. In fact, when you trace the outline with your finger, it looks kind of like . . . a "W."
There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight," currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war. Like W, Batman is vilified and despised for confronting terrorists in the only terms they understand. Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.
And like W, Batman understands that there is no moral equivalence between a free society -- in which people sometimes make the wrong choices -- and a criminal sect bent on destruction. The former must be cherished even in its moments of folly; the latter must be hounded to the gates of Hell.
"The Dark Knight," then, is a conservative movie about the war on terror. And like another such film, last year's "300," "The Dark Knight" is making a fortune depicting the values and necessities that the Bush administration cannot seem to articulate for beans.
Conversely, time after time, left-wing films about the war on terror -- films like "In The Valley of Elah," "Rendition" and "Redacted" -- which preach moral equivalence and advocate surrender, that disrespect the military and their mission, that seem unable to distinguish the difference between America and Islamo-fascism, have bombed more spectacularly than Operation Shock and Awe.
Why is it then that left-wingers feel free to make their films direct and realistic, whereas Hollywood conservatives have to put on a mask in order to speak what they know to be the truth? Why is it, indeed, that the conservative values that power our defense -- values like morality, faith, self-sacrifice and the nobility of fighting for the right -- only appear in fantasy or comic-inspired films like "300," "Lord of the Rings," "Narnia," "Spiderman 3" and now "The Dark Knight"?
The moment filmmakers take on the problem of Islamic terrorism in realistic films, suddenly those values vanish. The good guys become indistinguishable from the bad guys, and we end up denigrating the very heroes who defend us. Why should this be?
The answers to these questions seem to me to be embedded in the story of "The Dark Knight" itself: Doing what's right is hard, and speaking the truth is dangerous. Many have been abhorred for it, some killed, one crucified.
Leftists frequently complain that right-wing morality is simplistic. Morality is relative, they say; nuanced, complex. They're wrong, of course, even on their own terms.
Left and right, all Americans know that freedom is better than slavery, that love is better than hate, kindness better than cruelty, tolerance better than bigotry. We don't always know how we know these things, and yet mysteriously we know them nonetheless.
The true complexity arises when we must defend these values in a world that does not universally embrace them -- when we reach the place where we must be intolerant in order to defend tolerance, or unkind in order to defend kindness, or hateful in order to defend what we love.
When heroes arise who take those difficult duties on themselves, it is tempting for the rest of us to turn our backs on them, to vilify them in order to protect our own appearance of righteousness. We prosecute and execrate the violent soldier or the cruel interrogator in order to parade ourselves as paragons of the peaceful values they preserve. As Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon says of the hated and hunted Batman, "He has to run away -- because we have to chase him."
That's real moral complexity. And when our artistic community is ready to show that sometimes men must kill in order to preserve life; that sometimes they must violate their values in order to maintain those values; and that while movie stars may strut in the bright light of our adulation for pretending to be heroes, true heroes often must slink in the shadows, slump-shouldered and despised -- then and only then will we be able to pay President Bush his due and make good and true films about the war on terror.
Perhaps that's when Hollywood conservatives will be able to take off their masks and speak plainly in the light of day.
Mr. Klavan has won two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. His new novel, "Empire of Lies" (An Otto Penzler Book, Harcourt), is about an ordinary man confronting the war on terror.

IRON MAN FTW!!!! and G.I. Joe movie teaser pics
Still reeling from the intensity of the Iron Man movie (cue Black Sabbath riff), I went researching for upcoming comic book movies (and I did that just a few minutes ago, before I go out of the office for the weekend. Busy-ness).
Comicbookmovie.com says that the THIRD Iron Man movie might as well be The Avengers movie, which makes sense since Marvel is releasing Captain America and Thor in the next few years. I confess that I left the cinema just when the credits rolled because my dam of a bladder is going to burst, failing to see the "Avengers Initiative" cameo by Samuel L. Jackson, but I already saw it coming, the teaser-reading bastard I am.
I am now waiting for the Batman movie. I think I have to pee. Wait lang. *leaves
*returns.

Luma na, pero natawa lang talaga ako, pasensya na. :)
The skies were clear, the birds were chipping. Ang ganda-ganda ng araw!
Nasa SM ako noon at katatapos ko lang mamili ng groceries. Timing naman nasa foodcore si Angel Locsin, nagpro-provoke ng movie nya. Grabe, andaming fans, pull-packed talaga! Dahil fans nya rin ako, nakipila rin ako.
Then suddenly, out of the loo, may bumulong sa akin ng: “Indaaaayyyy. .....”
Huh? It sounded like a familiar sound. Who can it be now?
“Dodong!” sigaw ko.
Napalakas yata voice ko. Kasi the other fans turned their backs to their behind at napatingin sa amin. Sabi ko “Sorry, I didn't mean to be loud and proud.” Hinawakan na lang ni Dodong ang kamay ko at lumayo kami from the crowd.
“Kamusta na Inday? Do you come here open?,” tanong nya.
“Bihira lang, Dodong. I'm just droppings by. Ethnic and schedule ko eh,” sabi ko.
Memories came flushing in my mind. How can I forget to remember Dodong? Siya na may mata ni Piolo, dimple ni Aga, at bigote ni Rez Cortez. He’s every woman's dreamboat. I was just starting my tour of duty kay ate noon nang unang makilala ko si Dodong. Contraction worker siya sa ginagawang bahay sa tapat namin. Naging kami for a while then after that we’re not an item anymore.
“Tanghali na Inday. What did you say we have lunch together?” tanong ni Dodong. “I don't mine” sagot ko.
Sa restaurant, nilapitan kaagad kami ng waiter. “What's your odor sir?,” sabi nung waiter kay Dodong.
“Do you have porkshop?” tanong ni Dodong.
“Yes sir,” sabi nito. “Our porkshop with a resistance to the teeth of boast of our chef. Domestic careful selection of pork with little fat of female liking is used. The exquisite cooking which repeated trial and error and was completed. it also has healthy vegetables with salad feeling fully” dagdag niya.
“And you mam?” sabay tingin naman sa akin.
Hmmm... mukhang masarap yung porkshop. Pero I'm cutting down on my carbon kaya pinigilan ko.
“I'll just have water, thanks. Liquidate diet ako eh.” sagot ko.
Pagkatapos kumain, nagyaya si Dodong manood ng sine. Teka teka, this is going too far. Besides, it's a long, long way to run.
“Reality chess, Dodong. May asawa na ako, si Jay. As a mother of fact, I'm happily married,” pagmamalaki ko.
“Di na pwede yung tulad ng dati. Sorry pero I didn't expect you still have more feelings than I expected. i don't want you getting the way. Past is fast. Therefore, cause and defect.” dagdag ko pa.
Tumahimik sya. Parang may language barrel na namagitan sa amin. The seconds that passed seemed like fraternity. Di naglaon, nagsalita na rin sya.
“I don't care less!,” sigaw ni Dodong.
Shocks, give me a brake! The nerd ng taong ito para sigawan ako! To think it's his other woman that caused our separation to part.
Kinabahan na ako. I felt speedbumps all over my body and was having panic attach. Tinalikuran ko siya at nagmadali akong lumakad palayo. Pero sumunod pa rin siya like a monkey on my butt. Hanggang sa makakita ako ng security guard. Biglang nawala si Dodong.
“Excuse me kuya, pwedeng magtanong?” sabi ko sa mamang guard.
“Of course miss, I can help you with my pleasure.” sagot niya.
“Saan po ba ang exit? Could you point me to the right erection? I got lost in my eyes.”
“Diretso lang.” sabi niya. “Then turn right anytime with care.”
“Thanks for your corporation” sabi ko.
Buti na lang nandun si kuya. Pero saglit lang, I smell something peachy. As I turned, nakita ko na namang nakasunod si Dodong! Delaying static lang pala kanina ang pag disappear nya.
“Nyahahaha! You can run but you can hide, Inday. No matter where you go, there you are!” pananakot nya.
Oh no, is this the end? This is too much, I feel degradable. My world started falling afar.
Then suddenly, Jay come from behind! Dodong was caught to the act! In the matter of minute, it's all over. I'm out of arm's way.
“Thanks Jay, my love. But how did you?” bago pa man ako matapos, sabi niya:
“I was in the neighborhood. Fans din ako ni Angel eh. I heard you shout but at first I didn't give it a thought. Pero nang makita ko kayong magkahawak ng holding hands, then I give it a thought. I know something is a missed.”
From then on, Dodong did not brother me again. In fact, he didn't even sister me. As in platonic at wala na talaga.
Pero kami ni Jay, heto, shoot sailing pa rin ang relationship. Lalo pa ngayon, open na kami sa isa't-isa at walang exhibitions. I feel I'm on cloud.

Yahoo News: Disney previews 10 new animated movies, most 3-D
Disney previews 10 new animated movies, most 3-D
Tuesday April 8 7:46 PM ET
from http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20080408/120770918200.html
The Walt Disney Studios previewed 10 animated movies on Monday that it will release during the next four years, including further installments in the "Toy Story" and "Cars" series and two new fairy tales.
With the exception of "Wall.E," a robot love story opening on June 28, and "The Princess and the Frog," a hand-drawn animated fairy tale set in New Orleans and due to open Christmas 2009, the remaining eight movies will be made in digital 3-D.
"We're excited to be pushing the boundaries of 3-D and computer technology to tell our stories in the best possible way," said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.
Digital 3-D still requires moviegoers to wear geeky glasses, but the left- and right-eye images are calibrated so finely that most viewers experience no headache or eyestrain.
The first Disney digital 3-D movie for release is "Bolt," the story of a dog of the same name who thinks he has superhero powers. John Travolta gives voice to Bolt while hit teen singer/actress Miley Cyrus is voicing Bolt's owner Penny in the movie, due to open on November 26.
"Up," the story of an unlikely 78-year-old adventurer and his 8-year-old sidekick, is due to be released on May 29, 2009. "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" are due to be re-released in digital 3-D on October 2, 2009 and February 12, 2010 respectively, while "Toy Story 3" is due to hit screens on June 18, 2010.
All the original cast from the previous "Toy Story" films, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, are returning for the third film, which picks up with Andy grown up and about the head off to college.
The classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Rapunzel," about a girl trapped in a tower whose long golden hair is the only way for anyone to climb up to her, will be released at Christmas 2010.
Next comes "Newt," a story of the last two blue-footed newts on the planet that aims to show that love is not a science, which is due to hit screens in summer 2011.
Another new original fairy tale, "The Bear and the Bow" -- an action-adventure about a royal family in rugged and mythic Scotland -- is slated to open Christmas 2011 starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson.
"Cars 2," in which Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater bid to take on the world's fastest cars, is due for release in summer 2012. "King of Elves," based on a 1953 short story by Phillip K. Dick, will hit screens at Christmas 2012.

Pendejo News: Big Breasts Win Verdict For Japanese Gravure Idol
From Japan Probe and Yahoo! News
Big breasts win verdict for Japanese pin-up
Tue Mar 4, 12:15 AM ET
A Japanese pin-up model says that her big breasts have not only boosted her career -- they also helped her overturn a court verdict.
The bikini model, who goes by her professional name Serena Kozakura, was cleared after a court decided she was too well-endowed to squeeze into a room through a hole, as she had been found guilty of earlier.
"I used to hate my body so much," Kozakura, who has appeared in product commercials on television, told the private Asahi network in an interview aired Tuesday.
"But it was my breasts" that won in court, she said.
The case was splashed through the Japanese media on Tuesday, with the Asahi network even inviting her to demonstrate how she could not fit through the opening.
Kozakura, 38, was convicted last year of property destruction after a man said she kicked in the wooden door of his room and crawled inside, apparently because he was with another woman.
Kozakura had said the man made the hole himself.
In her appeal, the defence counsel held up a plate showing the size of the hole and said that she could not squeeze through with her 110-centimetre (44-inch) bust.
"The judges were very good-mannered as they showed no expressions on their faces. I guess they're well-trained," Kozakura said.
Tokyo High Court presiding judge Kunio Harada agreed and threw out the guilty verdict on Monday, saying there was reasonable doubt over the man's account.

Polaroid Instant Film Killed By The 21st Century
8:23 PM ON FRI FEB 8 2008
BY CHRISTOPHER MASCARI
Polaroid is closing its last remaining film plants in Massachussets so the oh so fun instant Polaroids will soon become a thing of the past. Well it's already a thing of the past, but this time it's serious since no more instant film will be produced.
Over the last two years Polaroid has stopped production on the instant cameras and now it's the film, which will be available till around next year. It was only a matter of time till Polaroid killed off the film since it was obviously a declining / nonexistent profit. So for all those Polaroid users out there, were sorry, looks like you'll only have another year left to take random pictures at house parties.
